The Consortium for the Protection and Enhancement of Terralba DOC is born

The Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of DOC Terralba Wines was established in July 2023. According to the regulations, 80% of the wine must be produced with the native Bovale grape, which offers great potential both in blends and as a single varietal. Luciana Baso, vice president of the consortium chaired by Marcello Martis, emphasizes that Bovale could become a true ambassador of the Terralbese area, appreciated both locally and internationally.

The seven founding members are Quartomoro, la Cantina del Bovale, Cantina di Mogoro, Su Cuppoi, Vini Melis, Lotta Azienda Agricola, and Sa Contissa. The production area of DOC Terralba extends both in the Oristano area and in Medio Campidano. The consortium looks not only to the local market, but also to Italian and foreign markets, leveraging the unique characteristics and great potential of these ruby red wines that come to life from hilly and flat lands near the sea, resulting in diverse outcomes.

Marcello Martis states that this is an excellent opportunity for companies and the territory, hoping for the entry of new producers. This concept is reiterated by Emanuele Spanò and Giovanni Murru, respectively director and president of Coldiretti Oristano, who have provided strong support for the initiative. Oenologist-agronomist Aldo Buiani pointed out that there are currently about 30 hectares of DOC vineyards with less than 2,000 quintals of Bovale grapes produced and between 40,000 and 50,000 bottles per year, a much lower quantity compared to the 1990s.

Almost 50 years after the creation of the DOC, Buiani highlighted how the consortium will work to adapt its regulations to modern times, to study the territory and the grape variety again, as well as their interaction, in order to identify the best terroirs. The goal is also to promote wine tourism to stimulate the wine sector.
